What Makes a Modified Modem So Special? A modified modem is not your average pocket WiFi. Here's the key difference: Standard Modem: Uses hotspot data from a SIM card. If your SIM plan limits hotspot usage, your WiFi is capped too. Modified Modem: Uses regular mobile data from any SIM plan. This means you can pair it with unlimited data SIMs (even if hotspot is limited) to create an unlimited WiFi connection at a much cheaper cost — depending on your SIM plan.
